Sinai Elementary is a small PK–5 school in Halifax, VA serving 243 students as part of Halifax County Public Schools. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism has fallen sharply from 44.8% in 2021-22 to 21.0% in 2024-25, though it remains above the state average of 14.8%. The school spends $11,984 per student and has a favorable 10.8:1 student-teacher ratio, yet outcomes still lag most peers. Sinai has also climbed from the 1st percentile in 2015-16 to its current 26th percentile—a major long-term improvement. Female students at Sinai rank in the 54th percentile statewide, while male students rank in the 32nd percentile, suggesting girls are being served notably better than boys. Replicating the strategies behind the 5th-grade and girls' success, while continuing to reduce absenteeism, may be the most promising way forward.
