Summary

Shrevewood Elementary is a PK-6 school in Falls Church, Virginia, serving 579 students as part of Fairfax County Public Schools. Located in a neighborhood surrounded by some of the region's top-performing schools, Shrevewood itself has fallen on harder times academically. After ranking in the 87th percentile (4 stars) in 2020-2021, the school has slipped for four consecutive years, landing at the 28th percentile (1 star) for 2025-2026 — 797th out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools.

The biggest concern for parents is academic performance. In nearly every subject and grade, Shrevewood trails the Fairfax district average. Math is especially problematic: proficiency falls from 69% in 3rd grade to just 50% in 6th grade, well below district averages of 78% and 69%. Fifth-grade science (54%) is also far behind the district (73%). Reading is closer to par — 3rd-grade reading essentially matches the district, and 6th-grade reading is above the Virginia average — but math and science gaps are large enough to pull overall rankings down.

The school is also struggling to serve its most vulnerable students. Low-income students rank in the 6th percentile statewide, and English learners and disabled students also score well below average. This matters more as the share of students eligible for free/reduced lunch has grown from 27.6% to 38% in two years. There are bright spots: chronic absenteeism has improved to 11.1%, below both district and state averages, and the student-teacher ratio has improved to 14.1:1. But compared with nearby Westgate Elementary, which has a similar poverty rate and ranks in the 51st percentile, Shrevewood is underperforming. The contrast with Haycock Elementary (100th percentile) and Stenwood Elementary (93rd percentile), both just a few miles away, is even starker.

Open Quote The school went through a two year period of high teacher turnover before the former principal retired - during that time, a lot of new families were unhappy. However, our kids have been going here for the long haul, and we are grateful for the strong PTA community and the dedicated teachers who have stuck it out for many years. The administration and teachers celebrate the diversity of the community the PTA raises a ton of money to support programs. The Before/After School program is exceptional. We would 100 choose to have our kids go here again. Close Quote

Open Quote Less teaching and more tests . No proper guidance or feedback about the student . The curriculum is too vague and lacks focus . They may have a few experienced teachers but most of them seem to be over burdened by the class strength. Close Quote
