Summary

Marshall Road Elementary is a PK-6 school in Vienna, VA, serving about 691 students as part of Fairfax County Public Schools. The school has struggled to match its district's reputation, ranking 620th of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools (44th percentile, 2 stars) in 2025-2026 — below every school in its cluster, including Wolftrap Elementary (#6), Flint Hill Elementary (#22), Oakton Elementary (#29), and Mantua Elementary (#36). About 34% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch — far higher than Wolftrap's 1.5% or Oakton's 13.2% — making Marshall Road an outlier in an otherwise affluent area. Only Cunningham Park Elementary (35%) and Fairhill Elementary (35.3%) have similar poverty levels.

Academically, the clearest pattern is a persistent "5th grade dip." In 2025-2026, 5th grade math proficiency was 56%, well below the district's 66.6% and the state's 72.4%; 5th grade science was 61.5% versus 72.7% district-wide. Nearby schools score in the high 80s and 90s on the same assessments. Subgroup data reveals ongoing equity challenges: low-income students have ranked in the bottom 5% of Virginia schools serving similar students for three consecutive years, and Hispanic and English Learner students have consistently placed in the bottom quarter statewide. White students rank closer to average (31st–47th percentile). One notable improvement: disabled students climbed from the 6th–7th percentile (2022–2024) to the 38th percentile in 2025-2026.

There are genuine bright spots. Chronic absenteeism fell from 19.7% in 2022-2023 to 9.1% in 2024-2025 — better than the district average of 11.9%. The school also spends more per student ($12,881) and has a lower student-teacher ratio (12.3) than most nearby schools. Yet extra resources alone haven't closed the gap: Fairhill Elementary, with a similar poverty rate, ranks #420 and posts higher 5th grade scores. Still, the trajectory is cautiously positive — Marshall Road has climbed from #833 (2023-2024) to #620 (2025-2026), aided by strong 6th grade reading gains. Sustaining attendance improvements and targeting 5th grade math and science could help the school return to its earlier 59th–69th percentile rankings.

Open Quote There seems to be no management! Principal Jennifer Heiges puts on a smile but does very little to improve MRES. The teachers do whatever they want and are not held accountable for their wrong and lack of doing. Apparently, the school is known by many as one of the lowest ranking schools in the area but MRES seems to refuse to improve it. The student receives a very poor education as a result. Close Quote

Open Quote This is a fantastic school. The Principal is wonderful and engaged, which sets a precedence from the top down. The teachers are great and very involved. The entire staff is very committed to the students and the school. This is a very impressive school. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has some great teachers and an active PTA. For years large numbers of gifted and talented students were bussed out of this school to go to another one which skews the test results a bit. But this is a great school. Close Quote
