Summary

Hollin Meadows Elementary is a PK-6 school in Alexandria, VA, serving 594 students as part of Fairfax County Public Schools — one of Virginia's strongest districts, ranked in the 70th percentile statewide. However, the school itself holds a 1-star rating and ranks in the bottom 12–14% of Virginia elementary schools, with 76.3% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

The contrast with nearby schools is striking. Within a two-mile radius, Waynewood Elementary ranks at the 94th percentile, while Hybla Valley Elementary ranks at the 5th percentile — and Hollin Meadows sits near the bottom at the 12th percentile. What makes this more notable is that schools with similar poverty levels achieve far better results: Riverside Elementary (80.3% FRPL) ranks at the 43rd percentile, and Bucknell Elementary (79.6% FRPL) ranks at the 38th percentile — both roughly 300–400 places higher. The school also struggles with chronic absenteeism at 20.2%, notably higher than nearby high-poverty schools like Mount Vernon Woods Elementary (10.3%) and Groveton Elementary (12.7%).

There are some encouraging signs. Math proficiency has improved meaningfully since 2022-23 — 4th grade math rose from 36.5% to 58.8%, and 6th grade math from 18.9% to 53.1%. However, English Learner students rank at the 1st percentile statewide, and 5th grade science proficiency has declined sharply from 64.2% to 45.3%. The school spends $13,672 per student, more than many higher-performing nearby schools, which suggests funding alone is not the answer. The bottom line: Hollin Meadows faces real challenges, but similar schools nearby prove that better outcomes are possible with the same demographics.

Open Quote This school has an active ED (Emotionally Disturbed children)center on sight. It is located in a separate building which also houses all 6 grade classrooms and art classrooms. Your child will be exposed to aggressive behavior, unacceptable language, disruptive outbursts, and disturbing behavior on a daily basis. Some of the ED kids are violent. These ED students are mainstreamed into regular classrooms and on the playground. The principal does not address behavioral issues. The school has a large population of kids who have very rough home lives and parents who are not involved. These students bring violent and aggressive behaviors to the school. If you do not want your child exposed to violence and disturbing behavior on a DAILY basis---then this school is not a good fit for your family. Close Quote
