Summary

Beech Tree Elementary is a pre-K through 5th grade school in Falls Church, VA, serving 366 students within Fairfax County Public Schools, a district ranked in the 70th percentile statewide. The school recently placed 715th out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools, landing in the 36th percentile with a 2-star rating — a meaningful improvement from the low 20th percentile of the prior two years. That mid-pack standing places it roughly in the middle of its neighborhood: it outperforms several nearby schools, including Graham Road Elementary, Westlawn Elementary, Woodburn Elementary, and Sleepy Hollow Elementary, but trails others by a wide margin, such as Columbia Elementary and Belvedere Elementary.

Beech Tree stands out in several positive ways. Its chronic absenteeism rate fell to 8.9% in 2024-25, well below the district rate of 11.9% and state rate of 14.8% — notable given that 71% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school is also notably effective with English Language Learners, who ranked in the 73rd percentile statewide in 2025-26, a dramatic turnaround from the 20th percentile two years earlier. Science outcomes are a bright spot, with 5th grade science proficiency (72.5%) essentially matching the district average. The school also maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.0.

The most pressing challenge is reading, which trails the district at every grade level and widens to a 24-point gap by 5th grade (52.5% vs. 76.5%). This is not a one-year anomaly; it has persisted for three years. Female students ranked in the 26th percentile while male students ranked in the 44th, a gap that warrants attention. Beech Tree spends $13,960 per student — less than several lower-performing nearby schools — suggesting that resources alone are not the answer. With improving attendance, strong ELL gains, and recent momentum, the school has a solid foundation, but closing the upper-elementary reading gap is the key to rising further.

Open Quote It's a small school where you feel a sense of community. The principal knows every child's name...every single one. We transferred from a private school and have been very impressed. Kids of all walks of life and different nationalities attend this school, which is important for my husband and I. Even the teachers are diverse. The teachers care and so does the administration. Our kids are happy, so that makes us happy. Close Quote

Open Quote Don't be mislead by the statistics, Beech Tree is a wonderful and SMALL elementary school that offers fantastic individualized instruction. Due to its small size coupled with a diverse student population that draws from a broad array of socio-economic backgrounds, student achievement statistics for the school are very misleading.
