Summary

Swift Creek Middle is a mid-sized public school in Midlothian, VA, serving approximately 1,180 students in grades 6–8 as part of Chesterfield County Public Schools. The school has built a strong regional reputation, ranking 95th out of 416 Virginia middle schools (77th percentile, 4 stars). Academically, Swift Creek consistently outperforms both its district and state averages in reading and math across all grade levels. For example, 6th-grade math proficiency is 84% compared to 64% district-wide, and 7th-grade reading proficiency reaches 84% versus 70% for the district. The school also excels at acceleration: 8th graders taking Algebra I post a 92% proficiency rate, while both 7th-grade Algebra I and 8th-grade Geometry students achieve 100% proficiency.

Swift Creek also stands out for strong attendance and equitable outcomes. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 11.6% is well below the district average of 16.1% and the state average of 14.8%. English Language Learners at the school rank in the 94th percentile statewide, and students from low-income families, students with disabilities, and multi-racial students all perform above state averages. Among nearby schools, Robious Middle is Swift Creek's closest peer, with similar poverty rates and a nearly identical statewide ranking. Slightly ahead are Tomahawk Creek Middle (91st percentile) and Midlothian Middle (86th percentile), both of which serve lower-poverty student populations. Swift Creek delivers these results while spending a modest $8,283 per student, suggesting an effective school culture rather than a resource advantage.

There are a few areas worth watching. While 8th-grade on-grade-level math proficiency (48%) trails the state average, this likely reflects that many strong math students are taking Algebra I or Geometry instead. Grade-level 8th-grade science is the school's clearest academic soft spot at 55% proficiency, though students in the accelerated Earth Science track achieve 99% proficiency. Military-connected students also saw a recent dip to the 22nd percentile, a notable change from prior years. Overall, Swift Creek has rebounded strongly from its pandemic-era dip, climbing from the 46th percentile in 2020–2021 to its current 77th percentile — a positive trajectory for families considering the school.

Open Quote The school is great education wise, I have been going there since the 6th grade, this year will sadly be my last. The teachers are mostly nice towards kids and seem to like their jobs, the only downsides to the school are the scheduling, the lunch, and the bugs, although the bugs aren't as bad as they were in 6th grade, they are still there. The schedules this year are all over the place, I am forced to move from one end of the school, to the other, in less than 5 minutes, by the time I get to class, I'm exhausted! The last problem is the lunch, I tend not to trust the meat here, because I am worried that it isn't cooked right, but like the bugs, it has gotten better over the years. Overall, the school is amazing, and the education is top notch, I have gotten all A's and B's throughout the years. I think that this school i good for kids that want to challenge themselves Close Quote
