Summary

Matoaca Middle is a grades 6–8 school in South Chesterfield, Virginia, serving 775 students within Chesterfield County Public Schools. For the 2025–2026 school year, Matoaca ranks 318th out of 416 Virginia middle schools, placing it in the 24th percentile with a 1-star rating — a meaningful improvement from the 11th–13th percentile range where the school sat from 2023 to 2025. The school serves a high-need population, with 76.26% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, and spends slightly more per student ($8,561) than nearby Chesterfield middle schools.

Academically, Matoaca shows a tale of two math programs. Students in accelerated tracks perform exceptionally well: 7th-grade Algebra I students reached 100% proficiency, and 8th-grade Geometry students posted 90.91% proficiency. However, grade-level math proficiency declines sharply by 8th grade, where just 23.86% of students are proficient — far below the state average. Sixth-grade reading is a relative strength at 75.29% proficiency, above both district and state averages. Science remains the biggest challenge, with only 36.97% of 8th graders proficient, though that is a strong improvement from 25.17% the prior year. Chronic absenteeism has improved steadily from 29.7% in 2022–2023 to 24.9% in 2024–2025, but it remains well above the district average of 16.1%.

Compared with nearby schools, Matoaca outranks several with similar poverty profiles, including Falling Creek Middle, Salem Church Middle, and Carver Middle. However, Elizabeth Davis Middle has nearly the same poverty rate yet ranks much higher. The school is particularly effective with Hispanic students, who perform at the 58th percentile statewide. Across nearly every subject, Matoaca posted strong one-year gains in 2025–2026, including an 11-point jump in 8th-grade reading. If this momentum continues, the school could rise to a 2-star rating in the coming years.

Open Quote CBG experience has been very positive, but it's a different curriculum for gifted. Two campuses currently being merged to one for the 2020 school year. Declining test scores/performance in recent years, unfortunately seems to be going downhill. CBG teachers were top notch though! Close Quote
