Summary

Greenbrier Elementary is a PK–4 school in Charlottesville, VA, serving 267 students as part of Charlottesville City Public Schools. Despite serving a student body where 72.3% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, Greenbrier has become one of the strongest-performing elementary schools in the area. The school currently ranks in the 66th percentile of Virginia elementary schools with a 3-star rating — a remarkable achievement given that the district as a whole sits in the 37th percentile.

Greenbrier's most striking strength is reading. In 3rd grade, 80.85% of students scored proficient in English reading, well above the district rate of 65.81% and the state rate of 67.61%. Fourth-grade reading (81.13%) is similarly strong. The school also shines in Virginia Studies, with 88.89% of 4th graders proficient. Perhaps even more impressive is the school's chronic absenteeism rate of just 6.8% — the lowest among all nearby schools and far below the district rate of 21.4%. Strong attendance, combined with a clear upward trajectory in state rankings (from the 39th percentile in 2023-24 to the 66th percentile in 2025-26), suggests a school that is steadily improving.

Compared with nearby schools, Greenbrier stands out. It is the second-highest-ranked city elementary school behind Sunrise Elementary (85th percentile), and it outperforms Jackson-Via Elementary, Summit Elementary, Tall Oaks Elementary, and Trailblazer Elementary by wide margins. In Albemarle County Public Schools, only Hollymead Elementary outranks Greenbrier — and Hollymead serves a much more affluent population. Schools like Woodbrook Elementary, Agnor Elementary, and Mary Carr Greer Elementary all rank well below Greenbrier despite similar or higher poverty levels. While math scores still hover near the state average, the upward trend there is encouraging. For parents, Greenbrier offers a compelling combination of strong reading outcomes, exceptional attendance, and consistent improvement — all achieved without exceptional per-student spending.

Open Quote Greenbrier Elementary is the best school in Charlottesville, VA! My son was at Greenbrier from ages 3-6, and he is now attending Greer Elementary and is always unhappy and not doing well. He has always done so well at Greenbrier and will be returning for the 2014 school year. The teachers are always very nice and Mr. Kyner is the best pricipal and you can tell that he truly cares for the students. I regret taking my child from Greenbrier. Close Quote

Open Quote I'm a parent and am appalled that someone would make such a reckless statement about Mr. Kyner. Clearly they weren't a good teacher and are trying to lash out in an inappropriate manner. Close Quote
