Tall Oaks Elementary in Charlottesville, VA, is a PK–4 school serving 327 students in the Charlottesville City Public Schools district. The school ranks in the 23rd percentile among Virginia elementary schools, well below the district's own mid-range state standing. With about 79% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, Tall Oaks serves a largely economically disadvantaged community. Despite the low overall scores, Tall Oaks has clear bright spots. Nearby Sunrise Elementary and Greenbrier Elementary have far lower absenteeism (9.2% and 6.8%) and post dramatically better test scores, despite also serving high-poverty populations. This suggests Tall Oaks' struggles are not solely demographic. With improving 4th grade results, better attendance, and a rising state ranking, Tall Oaks appears to be building momentum, but closing the income-based achievement gap remains its most urgent opportunity.

Johnson Elementary offers an excellent education. The quality of teachers is top-notch and the class sizes are small. The after school programs are plentiful and the community of parents (including many UVA professionals, doctors and post-graduate students) is active. Close Quote

Johnson Elementary is a wonderful school. The class sizes are small, allowing the students to be taught on an individual basis. The community is wonderful, with many of the students living in the surrounding neighborhoods. There are numerous after-school programs and many fundraisers, PTO meetings, school festivals, etc to get involved with. Our son has truly excelled at Johnson and we are so grateful to the wonderful teachers and staff. Close Quote

We waste money in my school every day. We have about an 11 to 1 student teacher ratio and the children still do not learn. Why? Because the school district keeps throwing money at us, so the 15% of staff that care AND are hard-working don't just have to make up for regular slackers, we attract the worst slackers because they pay and cronyism are rampent. We even have one "teacher" that didn't have a license for years but keep getting extensions because of her 'frends'. I wish I could leave but I look at the students in my class and I know they only get a few chances and I have to be one of those shots to knowledge if at all possible. Close Quote
