Summary

William Campbell High is a small, combined middle and high school in rural Naruna, Virginia, serving 384 students in grades 6 through 12 as part of Campbell County Public Schools. It spends more per student ($11,228) than any nearby comparison school and has the lowest student-teacher ratio (8.7), yet its overall state ranking trails Altavista High, Rustburg High, and Appomattox County High — all of which serve similar high-poverty populations. Despite being a 1-star school, it has improved from the 11th to the 29th percentile in state rankings over two years.

The school's strongest results are in middle school. Seventh graders score well above district and state averages in math and reading, and eighth graders have posted 100% proficiency in Algebra I for three straight years. High school biology and eleventh-grade English reading also exceed nearby schools. Attendance has improved dramatically: chronic absenteeism fell from 25.8% in 2021–2022 to 10.1% in 2024–2025, now below the state average. The dropout rate is just 1.4%, the lowest among comparison schools, though the graduation rate of 88.2% is lower than the district and most peers, suggesting some students may graduate late or use alternative pathways.

The main challenge is the transition to high school math and civics. Ninth-grade Algebra I proficiency (64.86%) and Geometry (70.59%) are far below district, state, and peer averages, and eighth-grade Civics also trails significantly. These gaps exist despite having the most resources per student among nearby schools, pointing to curriculum alignment and targeted support for 8th-to-9th grade as key opportunities. Outcomes also vary widely across different student groups from year to year, and gains are not evenly shared, which is a concern for school effectiveness. Overall, William Campbell is a middle-school bright spot with improving attendance and a very low dropout rate, but high school transition subjects remain the biggest hurdle.
