Summary

Twin Valley High is a small public school serving grades 8–12 in Pilgrims Knob, Virginia, with just 179 students and one of the highest poverty rates in the region—97% to 99% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school, part of Buchanan County Public Schools, has seen its statewide ranking fall sharply over the past decade: from the 80th percentile in 2015–16 to the 10th percentile in 2025–26, placing it near the bottom of Virginia's 331 high schools. The decline has accelerated recently, dropping from the 37th percentile in 2021–22 to the 10th percentile in 2025–26.

The academic profile at Twin Valley High is sharply divided by subject. Students outperform state averages in 8th-grade English Reading (84% vs. 73.5%), Algebra I (85.7% vs. 80.2%), and Geometry (87.5% vs. 85.9%). Perhaps most striking is the gender gap: male students have ranked at the 1st or 16th percentile statewide in recent years, while female performance has swung dramatically from the 88th to the 1st percentile in consecutive years.

The contrast with nearby Hurley High is instructive. Just 10.7 miles away in the same district, Hurley High serves a nearly identical student population—97% low-income—yet ranks 123rd statewide compared with Twin Valley High's 299th. Hurley High posts a 100% graduation rate, a 0% dropout rate, and much stronger test scores in 11th-grade reading (92.1% vs. 75%) and Biology (76.9% vs. 57.9%). This shows that poverty and rural location don't have to dictate outcomes. Twin Valley High has shown it can achieve excellent results—100% graduation in some years and perfect Algebra I proficiency in 2024–25—but the current trend suggests a need for targeted help, especially for male students and in high school science and social studies.
