Summary

Huddleston Elementary is a small, rural PK–5 school in Huddleston, Virginia, serving 221 students in Bedford County Public Schools. The school has climbed steadily in statewide rankings over the past decade, moving from the 14th percentile in 2015-2016 to the 49th percentile in 2025-2026 — its best showing in recent years. Huddleston serves a very high-poverty population, with over 100% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch in 2024-2025, and maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.5 to 1.

One of the school's biggest successes has been attendance. Chronic absenteeism has fallen from 23.4% in 2020-2021 to just 9.2% in 2024-2025 — now well below both the district (11.8%) and state (14.8%) averages. Huddleston also excels in early-elementary reading: 3rd grade reading proficiency reached 78.1% and 4th grade reading hit 81.1%, both above district and state averages. The school is especially effective at supporting economically disadvantaged students, with that subgroup ranking in the 65th percentile statewide — up from the 34th percentile just two years earlier. Male students have also shown dramatic improvement, jumping from the 23rd to 56th percentile in the same period.

The clearest area for growth is 5th grade math, where only 50% of students were proficient in 2025-2026 — far below the district (76.2%) and state (72.4%) — and this weakness has persisted for several years. By comparison, Moneta Elementary, a nearby school just 7.9 miles away with similar enrollment and poverty levels, posted a 73.5% proficiency rate in 5th grade math and ranks in the 78th percentile statewide. High-poverty peer John L. Hurt Elementary also outperforms Huddleston significantly, with 88.2% proficiency in 5th grade math. These comparisons suggest that poverty does not have to limit outcomes, and that targeted math intervention and curriculum alignment in the upper grades could help Huddleston translate its early-elementary strengths into sustained success across all grade levels.
