Summary

Barrett Elementary is a PK–5 school in Arlington, VA, serving about 500 students as part of the highly regarded Arlington County Public Schools. Despite the district's strong reputation — ranked in the 80th percentile of Virginia districts — Barrett itself ranks 924th out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools, placing it in the 17th percentile and earning a 1-star rating. This low ranking is consistent with a decade-long pattern of bottom-quartile performance, and it makes Barrett one of the lowest-performing schools in its own neighborhood cluster.

Barrett's academic challenges are most visible in Virginia SOL results. In 3rd grade math, just 51% of Barrett students passed, compared to 81% across the district; 4th grade reading shows a similar gap (57% vs. 79%). These proficiency gaps appear in nearly every grade and subject. Nearby schools with similar poverty levels tell a very different story — Campbell Elementary has nearly the same share of students receiving free/reduced lunch (about 57%) yet ranks in the 77th percentile statewide. Chronic absenteeism is also a concern: at 14.8%, Barrett's rate is the highest among its nearby comparison schools, roughly double that of Escuela Key Elementary (6.3%). Notably, Barrett spends more per student ($20,535) and has a lower student-teacher ratio (9.5:1) than almost every nearby school, yet outcomes remain among the lowest.

There are a few encouraging signs. Fifth-grade math proficiency reached 69.9%, the closest Barrett has come to the district average and ahead of several nearby schools. However, achievement gaps among student groups are wide: English learners and students from low-income families score well below their peers, and these gaps have persisted for years. The school's poverty rate has dropped sharply in recent years without corresponding gains in test scores. For parents, the key takeaway is that Barrett has ample resources and some bright spots, but chronic absenteeism and uneven outcomes for its highest-need students are likely holding the school back from matching the success of its neighbors.
