The 16 elementary schools in Roanoke County Public Schools serve grades PK-5 across the Roanoke Valley area of southwestern Virginia, enrolling about 5,974 students. The district is ranked 11th out of 131 Virginia districts with a 5-star rating, but individual school state rankings vary widely, from Bonsack Elementary at #21 to Burlington Elementary at #625.

Among the strongest schools are Bonsack Elementary, Back Creek Elementary, Cave Spring Elementary, Penn Forest Elementary, and Fort Lewis Elementary, all with average SOL proficiency above 89% and state rankings in the top 9%. Bonsack stands out with a 94% average proficiency and the lowest chronic absenteeism rate at 3.7%. At the other end, Burlington is the district's only 2-star school, with a 90% free/reduced-price lunch rate and the lowest proficiency at 71.1%. The biggest academic weakness across the district is 3rd grade reading, averaging 77%, with Glenvar Elementary notably low at 51.6%.

Money and staffing don't automatically translate into results: Mason's Cove Elementary has the highest per-pupil spending and lowest student-teacher ratio yet only mid-tier proficiency, while Green Valley Elementary achieves strong outcomes with the lowest spending. Chronic absenteeism is a bright spot, averaging 7.5% compared to the state's 14.8%, though Mason's Cove, W.E. Cundiff Elementary, and Oak Grove Elementary run above the district average. Overall, families will find many excellent options, but early literacy and targeted support for high-poverty schools like Burlington remain key areas to watch.
