Summary

Glenvar Elementary is a PK–5 school in Salem, VA, serving 372 students as part of Roanoke County Public Schools, a highly rated district ranked 11th out of 131 in Virginia. The school itself sits in the middle of the pack: for 2025–2026, it ranked 446th out of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools (60th percentile, 3 stars), a decline from its 2023–2024 peak of 325th statewide. It ranks below every comparable elementary school in its own district, including Back Creek Elementary, Fort Lewis Elementary, Glen Cove Elementary, Mason's Cove Elementary, and Oak Grove Elementary.

The school's biggest red flag is 3rd-grade reading: only 51.6% of students were proficient in 2025–2026, compared to 75.6% for the district and 67.6% for the state. Just 1.34 miles away, Fort Lewis Elementary posted a 94.4% proficiency rate in the same subject and grade. However, Glenvar's performance is highly uneven rather than uniformly weak. Upper-grade results are solid: 5th-grade math hit 86.4%, 4th-grade reading reached 87.0%, and 5th-grade science came in at 81.4% — all above state averages. The school's overall proficiency average of roughly 77% sits above the state (72%) but below the district (83%). Notably, Glenvar performs better for economically disadvantaged students than for its student body as a whole, ranking in the 77th percentile statewide for that subgroup.

There are genuine positives to build on. Chronic absenteeism is just 7.1%, well below the state's 14.8%, so attendance is not the obstacle. The school also outperforms much higher-poverty schools like Eastern Montgomery Elementary, suggesting demographics alone don't explain the results. That said, Glenvar spends less per student ($10,676) and has larger class sizes than most nearby peers, which may contribute to its middling outcomes. The steep drop in 3rd-grade reading — from 73.7% in 2024–2025 to 51.6% this year — deserves immediate attention. Since 4th- and 5th-grade reading are much healthier, the issue may be concentrated in a specific cohort or early-grade approach. Parents should ask the school how it plans to target early literacy while maintaining the strong upper-grade math and science programs that are clearly working.
