Summary:

Montgomery County Public Schools in southwest Virginia serves 19 schools — 11 elementary, 4 middle, and 4 high schools — with about 9,461 students spread across Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Riner, Shawsville, and surrounding communities. The district ranks 51st out of 131 Virginia districts with a 3-star rating, placing it in the 61st percentile. School sizes range dramatically, from 193 students at Shawsville Middle to 1,325 at Blacksburg High. The most telling pattern is geographic: Blacksburg-area schools consistently outperform schools in the eastern and southern parts of the county, and poverty levels closely track these differences.

Kipps Elementary is the district's standout, ranking 67th of 1,111 Virginia elementary schools with a 5-star rating and proficiency rates above 94% in reading and math. Harding Avenue Elementary is also strong at the 89th percentile with the lowest chronic absenteeism in the district at 4.4%. Among middle schools, Blacksburg Middle leads at 70th of 416 statewide, with a steady three-year improvement trend and 100% proficiency on Algebra I and Geometry cohorts. Blacksburg High ranks 96th of 331 high schools with a 95.4% graduation rate. Auburn High is an interesting case — it has the district's highest graduation rate at 95.9% and above-state-average Biology proficiency, despite a mid-tier rank.

At the other end, Eastern Montgomery High ranks 303rd of 331 with the district's highest chronic absenteeism at 28.2%, and Eastern Montgomery Elementary ranks 977th of 1,111 with just 36.4% 5th-grade math proficiency. Shawsville Middle is the lowest-ranked middle school at 363rd of 416, with 8th-grade science proficiency of only 13.3%. Christiansburg High has declined notably over three years, from 169th to 251st. Science is a district-wide weakness, especially in middle and high school. On a positive note, graduation rates are strong across all four high schools, and the advanced math pipeline is excellent — every middle school reports near-100% proficiency on accelerated Algebra and Geometry exams.
