While that overall rating sits below the state median, individual schools tell a more varied story, with elementary schools ranging from the 28th to 69th percentile in statewide rankings.

Some elementary schools are genuine standouts. Drewry Mason Elementary ranks 349th in the state and beats the Virginia average in every tested subject, including 86.79% proficiency in 3rd grade math. Rich Acres Elementary is similarly strong, exceeding state averages across reading, math, and Virginia Studies. Sanville Elementary made the district's biggest jump, moving from the 32nd to 55th percentile in a single year. At the high school level, Magna Vista High clearly outperforms Bassett High: its graduation rate is 90.5% versus 81.9%, its dropout rate is 4.1% versus 13.8%, and it ranks higher in the state. On the other end, Campbell Court Elementary is the district's weakest elementary, with 4th grade math proficiency at just 47.62%.

The secondary level is the district's biggest concern. Both middle schools — Fieldale-Collinsville Middle and Laurel Park Middle — rank near the 26th percentile, with 8th grade math proficiency far below state averages. However, their accelerated math programs are exceptional: 96.88% and 98.28% of 8th graders taking Algebra I are proficient, above the state's 93.26%. History and science scores are alarmingly low at the high school level, with Bassett High posting just 12.5% proficiency in Virginia/U.S. History and Magna Vista High just 9.09% in World History II. The bottom line: this high-poverty district has pockets of excellence — especially at Drewry Mason, Rich Acres, and in advanced math — but secondary science, history, and attendance demand urgent attention.
