Summary:

In the city of Check, Virginia, there is just one public school: Check Elementary, a PK-7 school serving 277 students as part of Floyd County Public Schools. This is an unusually structured elementary school that extends through 7th grade, and it serves a high-poverty community, with nearly 82% of students receiving free or reduced lunch.

Check Elementary’s biggest strength is upper-grade math. In 2025-2026, 7th grade math proficiency hit 79.31%, which is nearly 30 points above the Virginia average of 51.11%. Fifth and 6th grade math also beat the state, and overall math proficiency was slightly above both the district and state averages. However, reading is more of a challenge. The school’s reading average of 67.0% trails the district (70.8%) and state (72.0%), with 3rd grade reading at just 54.84% and 6th grade reading at 62.07%. Early-grade math is another weak spot: 3rd grade math proficiency is 58.06%, well below the state’s 74.04%. Despite these gaps, the school improved in 11 of 13 tested categories from 2024-2025 to 2025-2026, including dramatic gains in 4th grade Virginia Studies (+23.86 points), 5th grade reading (+13.25), and 4th grade math (+12.29). The main decline was a 16-point drop in 6th grade reading.

The school’s state ranking improved from 821st (1 star) to 747th (2 stars) out of about 1,111 Virginia schools, though it still sits in the 33rd percentile. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 12.4% is better than both the district (15.7%) and state (14.8%), which is notable given the high poverty rate. With a low student-teacher ratio of 12.5:1 and clear momentum in math, Check Elementary is an improving school. The path forward is sharpening its focus on early literacy and stabilizing mid-grade reading, which would help lift its overall ranking and give students a stronger foundation.
