Pine View Middle

Pine View Middle in St. George, Utah, serves 701 students in grades 8–9 and is part of Washington District, which ranks 42nd among Utah’s 92 districts. The school is smaller than nearby Desert Hills Middle, Dixie Middle, and Crimson Cliffs Middle. Its student-teacher ratio is 22.6:1, the most favorable of the four schools, but academic and attendance results are generally weaker.

The biggest concern is 8th-grade achievement. In 2025–2026, Pine View proficiency was 36.4% in English Language Arts, 33.5% in math, and 35.0% in science—below both Utah and the district in every subject. Science was especially weak, trailing the state by 15.8 percentage points and the district by 22.1 points. Pine View ranked lowest among the four nearby schools in all three 8th-grade subjects; by comparison, Crimson Cliffs Middle recorded 73.9% ELA, 81.7% math, and 80.0% science proficiency. Ninth-grade results were stronger: ELA and science were above statewide rates, while math matched the state, though all three remained below district results. The sharpest recent declines occurred among 8th graders, particularly in math and science.

Attendance is another important issue. Pine View’s chronic absenteeism rate was 24.8% in 2024–2025, equal to Dixie Middle but higher than Desert Hills Middle at 13.4% and Crimson Cliffs Middle at 17.3%. Although attendance has improved from 32.6% in 2022–2023, it remains above the district’s 15.4%. Pine View also serves a higher share of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch—42.23% versus 16.17% at Desert Hills and 11.47% at Crimson Cliffs—which is important context when comparing outcomes. Key priorities are strengthening 8th-grade instruction, especially science and math, and continuing efforts to improve attendance.
