Summary

Ogden Preparatory Academy (OPA) is a large alternative public school in Ogden, Utah, serving about 1,014 students in prekindergarten through ninth grade at 1415 Lincoln Avenue. The school serves a higher-need student population than nearby comparison schools, with 64.1% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Its 2024–2025 student-teacher ratio was 18.0, but chronic absenteeism was a major concern: 36.5% of students were chronically absent, compared with 23.8% statewide. This attendance rate was higher than at Davinci Academy, North Davis Preparatory Academy, Venture Academy, and Quest Academy.

Recent academic results were well below Utah averages in most grades and subjects. In 2025–2026, OPA’s English language arts proficiency ranged from 12.0% to 34.2% in grades 3–8, while mathematics proficiency ranged from 11.3% to 20.4%. Ninth-grade results were 32.2% proficient in ELA and 15.2% in mathematics. Science was a relative strength, averaging approximately 24.4% in grades 4–8, with ninth-grade science reaching 39.8%. Compared with nearby schools, OPA generally trailed by wide margins. For example, third-grade mathematics proficiency was 15.7% at OPA versus 69.6% at Quest Academy, while fourth-grade science was 16.9% at OPA versus 50.6% at nearby Davinci Academy.

There are a few encouraging signs, including improved ninth-grade science and stronger upper-grade ELA results than in the early grades. However, mathematics remains a broad schoolwide weakness, and attendance has stayed elevated over several years, rising again to 36.5% in 2024–2025 after improving temporarily. Families comparing schools should consider both the outcomes and the context: OPA serves a more economically disadvantaged population and has higher absenteeism than most nearby alternatives. Still, schools such as North Davis Preparatory Academy, Highmark Charter School, and Quest Academy show stronger academic results. Attendance support, foundational mathematics, and early-grade literacy appear to be OPA’s most important improvement priorities.
