Summary

American Preparatory Academy - The School for New Americans is a public charter elementary school in West Valley City, Utah, serving 557 students in grades K-6. The school is part of the American Preparatory Academy district, which is ranked 36 out of 93 districts in the state.

The school has a unique student population, with a high percentage of Hispanic students (ranked 7th out of 33 Utah elementary schools) and English Language Learner students (ranked 2nd out of 23 Utah elementary schools). It also serves a large number of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ranking 24th out of 109 Utah elementary schools in this category. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by RISE test scores, is significantly lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 29.6% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in RISE Mathematics, compared to 62.1% at other American Preparatory Academy schools and 48.6% statewide. The school has also struggled with high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 12.2% to 25.2% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average.

Interestingly, the nearby public schools, such as Mountain View School, Stansbury School, Granger School, and Woodrow Wilson School, generally perform better academically than American Preparatory Academy - The School for New Americans, with higher test scores and better rankings. This suggests that the low performance of the school may not be solely due to the demographics of the student population. The school's lower funding and higher student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools may also be contributing factors to its struggles.

Open Quote I love this school!
my 6 year old is a very active boy and at first it was hard for him to sit still and participate in class. but his teacher took the time to help him be a better student and she even help me .
another thing that I love is the after school program. they teach kids about music . not only how to play a instrument but also general music, composers ect .
teachers and school staff really care for the kids. Close Quote

Open Quote American Preparatory Academy is a great school! The staff offers great incentives to encourage students to work harder and be the best they can be. Students are separated into smaller groups for math, reading, and spelling so they can all learn at their own pace and grasp the concepts better. Also, the lunches are healthier than the usual. As oppposed to greasy pizza or frozen burritos, we eat delicious meals such as chicken salad and strawberry yogurt. The school offers an amazing Ambassador Program where children learn things from how to use manners in a formal setting to fun things such as the foxtrot and waltz. The school has no holiday events so students from different backgrounds and cultures do not have to feel uncomfortable. In the past two years, American Prep has organized an event called "The Giving Store", where students can choose out one item to give to each of their family members. This shows them the importance of caring and sharing.
I am past the third grade and I have not struggled at all. Teachers are always available for my peers and I whenever we need help. One of the classes or periods that junior high students have in their schedule is Study Skills. This allows them to have a head start on homework for as much as an hour on a regular day. There is also extended day for the whole school where students who need or even think they need extra help on their homework may stay in a classroom and ask questions. Parents ARE required to participate every night with homework, in order to know the progress their kids are making in all aspects.
Parents drive their children all the way to our school for a reason. Because American Prep isn't just any school. Its a great charter school. There is transportation for students who live far from the school or who cannot get there otherwise. School traffic rules are there to prevent parents from getting stuck in traffic and receiving tickets. If everyone followed these rules, children would find their vehicles faster and parents would not have to wait so long. I am glad to be part of the American Preparatory student body and I will always reccomend it as a great school. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is very over rated. My children's grades declined over a 2yr period. They have to many kid's per classroom. They have no cafeteria, and have food delivered from a deli and it is unacceptable. The school has no social activity's, and no holiday events. They have no attendance personnel to call if your kid does not make it to school. If a child is put into this school any later than 3rd grade it is really hard for them. Even the smartest child struggles, with the homework up to 2 hours worth each night, in which parents are required to participate nightly also. And there is no school offered transportation you are responsible for taking them to school, and the residents in the neighborhood are quite displeased with the school traffic. And will not allow parking or stopping in front of their home. If you do not follow the school drop off rules you may be stuck in slow traffic a while, and or ticketed. I have taken both children out of this school for this year. And I will not put the back in even tough I live in viewing distance from this school. Close Quote
