Salt Lake District has five middle schools serving 2,620 students in grades 6–8, although four schools serve only grades 7–8, and the schools show wide differences in academic performance, attendance, and student needs.
Clayton Middle is the clear academic leader, ranking sixth out of 217 Utah schools and earning five stars. Its average reported proficiency was about 66%, with especially strong eighth-grade science at 74.2%, and its chronic absenteeism rate was the lowest in the group at 18.4%. Hillside Middle also performed very well, ranking 22nd statewide with an average proficiency of about 60% and five stars. Salt Lake Center for Science Education Bryant ranked 198th, averaged about 25% proficiency, and had the highest absenteeism rate at 34.6%; its statewide standing has declined over three years. Glendale Middle ranked 200th and averaged about 23%, with particularly concerning sixth-grade results, including 6.9% proficiency in mathematics. For families comparing schools, mathematics is a major weakness at these three campuses, while attendance is an important difference: the highest-performing schools have the lowest absenteeism. Ratios and historical spending do not show a simple connection to achievement.
