Summary

Yorktown High School is a small, rural school in Yorktown, TX, serving 171 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Yorktown Independent School District (Isd). The school offers a very low student-to-teacher ratio of 9.2:1, which allows for more individualized attention, but its overall academic performance has been mixed, earning a 2-star rating (35th percentile) for the 2025-2026 school year.

One of the most striking findings is the "two schools" phenomenon at Yorktown. The school excels with its Gifted and Talented students, ranking in the 99th percentile statewide (5-star rating). However, it struggles significantly with its economically disadvantaged students, ranking in the 22nd percentile (1-star rating). This internal achievement gap is a key concern. When compared to nearby Cuero High School (16 miles away), Yorktown is consistently outperformed in core subjects like Algebra I (24.24% proficiency vs. Cuero's 45.95%) and Biology (50% vs. 71.83%). Even more surprising, Runge High School (13.76 miles away), which has a higher poverty rate, outperformed Yorktown in several 2025-2026 End-of-Course exams, including Algebra I (45.45% vs. 24.24%) and English I Reading (88.89% vs. 41.46%).

Yorktown's graduation rate has been volatile, with perfect 100% rates in two of the last five years but dropping to 91.9% in 2023-2024, lower than Cuero's 98.6%. The school also spends a substantial $14,126 per student, yet these resources have not translated into strong, consistent academic outcomes for the general student body. Test scores have declined in recent years across English I Reading, English II Reading, and Biology, while Algebra I proficiency remains persistently low at around 24-27%, far below the state average of 54%. This suggests that while the school is well-funded, the allocation and use of those resources may need to be re-evaluated to better support all students.

Open Quote I strongly do not recommend this school. My child attended for one year and it was a waste of time. Although they have a zero tolerance policy on drugs, they don't enforce it. The last straw was when one of the teachers literally screamed at my child. I think the concept is great but the management and execution of the plan is horrible. Close Quote
