Summary

Dr R E Margo Elementary is a large elementary school in Weslaco, TX, serving 1,085 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Weslaco Independent School District (Isd). The school has shown a remarkable recovery, climbing from a low of the 11th percentile statewide in 2020-2021 to the 55th percentile in 2025-2026, a 44-percentile-point swing that suggests strong leadership and effective interventions.

Dr R E Margo Elementary excels in two key areas. Its Gifted and Talented program ranks in the 90th percentile statewide, a massive leap from the 36th percentile just two years prior. The school also performs exceptionally well with its economically disadvantaged students, ranking in the 74th percentile for this group—a critical strength given that nearly 9 out of 10 students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This means the school is effectively closing the achievement gap for its core demographic. However, the school faces a significant challenge with its Special Education students, ranking in the 7th percentile for this group, which is a major area of concern. In 5th Grade Math, the school outperforms the district and state averages, scoring 57.23% proficient compared to the district's 51.88% and the state's 47.38%.

Compared to nearby schools, Dr R E Margo is a solid middle-of-the-pack performer within Weslaco ISD. It is outperformed by Memorial Elementary (78th percentile), Sam Houston Elementary (75th percentile), and Raul A Gonzalez Junior Elementary (80th percentile). For example, in 5th Grade Reading, Margo scored 53.75%, while Memorial scored 69.7% and Sam Houston scored 62.71%. Interestingly, the school's per-student spending ($10,909) is higher than several of these higher-performing peers, suggesting that reallocating resources toward Special Education programs could yield significant returns.

Open Quote Staff is terrible starting with principle , teachers have no respect for students. They always punish them for any little thing. They mistreat them, extremely unprofessional. Several issues brought to principle and district attention and never resolved. Rate this school as poor , teachers do not work with students to improve grades. Close Quote
