Summary

Lake Air Montessori School is a public PK-8 magnet school in Waco, TX, serving 734 students within the Waco Independent School District (Isd). This school stands out as a high-performing option in a district where most other elementary schools rank in the bottom 20% of Texas schools. For example, nearby schools like Cedar Ridge Elementary, West Avenue Elementary, and Brook Avenue Elementary all rank in the 0th to 19th percentile statewide, while Lake Air sits at the 38th percentile. The only other school in the district performing at a similar level is Hillcrest Pds Magnet, which is also a magnet school, suggesting the Montessori program is a key driver of success.

Academically, Lake Air consistently outperforms its district peers by wide margins. In reading, proficiency rates are often double or triple the district average, and in 8th-grade math, the school achieved a 51.56% proficiency rate compared to the district's 17.9%. The most impressive metric is Algebra I acceleration: 88% of Lake Air's 8th graders were proficient in 2025-2026, far exceeding the district's 31% and the state's 54%. However, the school has notable weaknesses. Seventh-grade math has been a crisis point, with 0% proficiency in 2025-2026, and 5th-grade science consistently lags behind state averages. The school also shows significant equity gaps, performing well for White and African American students but struggling with Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low-income students.

Despite these challenges, Lake Air has shown a remarkable upward trajectory over the past decade, climbing from the bottom 20% of Texas schools to consistently sitting in the top 40-60% in recent years. The school's favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.4:1 and its diverse student body—with 68% qualifying for free/reduced lunch—create a more stable learning environment compared to neighboring schools where poverty rates exceed 95%. For parents seeking a school that offers academic acceleration and a strong magnet program within a struggling district, Lake Air Montessori is a standout choice, though it requires attention to its inconsistent performance across grades and subjects.

Open Quote This school is wonderful. The Montessori method is better than I would have ever dreamed. The teachers and administration care about the well being of each student and work very hard to provide a good education and social environment for each child. Close Quote

Open Quote My eldest son attended Lake Waco Montessori from 1st through 8th grade, and my youngest has attended since age three. He will enter 7th grade at LWMM in the fall of 2010. Both boys have had an excellent experience with caring teachers, a rigorous program, and several enrichment experiences. School administrators know each child's name, strengths, and challenges, and the staff has always held the students to high expectations. Close Quote
