Summary

Uvalde High School in Uvalde, TX, serves 1,148 students in grades 9-12 and is part of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, which faces significant challenges as it ranks in the 2nd percentile statewide.

While Uvalde High School has maintained a stable graduation rate above 90% over the last five years, its academic performance on state assessments is consistently below state averages across core subjects. A bright spot is Biology, where 58% of students were proficient in 2024-2025, close to the state average. However, Algebra I proficiency was just 20.93% in 2025-2026. The school's Gifted and Talented program is a critical concern, with students performing in the 6th percentile statewide, suggesting the program is not effectively challenging its highest-achieving students. Interestingly, English Language Learner students have shown improvement, jumping from the 9th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 32nd percentile in 2024-2025.

Compared to nearby La Pryor Secondary, just 19 miles away, Uvalde High School lags significantly despite both schools serving a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students. La Pryor outperforms Uvalde in nearly every academic metric, including Algebra I (60.87% vs. 20.93% proficient), Biology (76.92% vs. 49.81%), and has a lower dropout rate (0.5% vs. 3.4%). The district's Crossroads Academy, an alternative high school with 59 students, ranks in the 0th percentile and has a 7.6% dropout rate, highlighting that Uvalde High School serves as the district's primary academic engine. The challenges appear systemic to the district, as test scores are often only slightly above district averages, suggesting cumulative academic deficits from feeder schools that the high school struggles to overcome.

Open Quote I moved to Uvalde in the middle of high school. The public school I had attended (in another stated) offered the same classes in 10th grade as were required to take in Uvalde in 11th grade. As a consequence, I was forced to simply repeat the coursework, as nothing else was offered. They told me that if I did not repeat the coursework I would not have enough credits to graduate.

I was shocked to hear teachers telling students that our education had not prepared us for college. Teachers would tell us about students who went away to college and had to come home because they were unprepared for the rigors of an acutal education.

The big deal assignment in 12th grade was to write one reaserch paper (One!) It was a process that took the entire year. We were threatened with not graduating if the one required paper was not written correctly. I could not believe that as seniors in high school one single research paper was all that was required and that our hands were held ever step of the way. This was something I had learned in the seventh grade.

I realized that it was true when the teachers said that their students were not ready for college. And I don't know how those teachers can live with themselves.

The education offered in this city is nothing short of abysmal. Close Quote
