Summary

Trinity J H is a small middle school in Trinity, TX, serving 246 students in grades 6-8 within the Trinity Independent School District (Isd), a district that ranks in the bottom 6% of Texas. The school has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.9:1 and spends $13,379 per student, which is notably higher than nearby schools, yet its academic performance is significantly below state averages and local peers. For example, in the most recent year, only 4.6% of 6th graders and 2% of 7th graders were proficient in math, compared to state averages of 38.57% and 29.41%, respectively. Reading proficiency is also low, with just 29.55% of 6th graders meeting standards versus 53.52% statewide. Despite these challenges, the school maintains a very low dropout rate of 0.4%.

Compared to Mance Park Middle in the Huntsville Independent School District (Isd), which serves 1,298 students and spends $8,257 per pupil, Trinity J H spends 62% more per student but achieves far lower results. For instance, in 8th-grade math, only 15.48% of Trinity students are proficient versus 46% at Mance Park Middle. Even Texas Online Preparatory Middle, a virtual school in the same district, outperforms Trinity in nearly every subject, such as 6th-grade reading (44.3% proficient vs. 29.55%). The school also has a very high level of economic disadvantage, with 87.4% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, compared to 73.73% at Mance Park Middle.

One interesting bright spot is in Algebra I for 8th graders, where 81% were proficient in 2022-2023, far exceeding the state average of 45%, though this success has been inconsistent. However, overall performance is in a downward trend, with the school dropping from the 20th percentile in 2020-2021 to the 8th percentile in 2025-2026. Subgroup performance has also declined sharply, with African American students in the bottom 3% and Hispanic students in the bottom 5% of the state. The special education subgroup has been a relative strength, ranking in the 26th percentile in 2024-2025, but this too has slipped. These patterns suggest that while targeted instruction can work for some students, the school struggles to scale success across its population.
