Summary

Tom Bean Elementary is a small, rural PK-5 school in Tom Bean, TX, serving 358 students within the Tom Bean Independent School District (Isd). The school has a favorable student-to-teacher ratio of 14.4:1 and spends slightly below the state average per pupil, but it is currently at a critical crossroads, having experienced a dramatic decline from a high-performing 88th percentile statewide ranking in 2021-2022 to the 41st percentile in the most recent data.

The most pressing concern is a systemic weakness in mathematics. In the 2025-2026 school year, Tom Bean’s 4th-grade math proficiency rate was just 20%, far below the state average of 49.28% and dramatically lower than nearby schools like Bells Elementary (85.9%) and Whitewright Elementary (85%). This suggests a need for an urgent review of math instruction and curriculum. The school also shows inconsistent support for its most vulnerable students, with performance for English Language Learners and Special Education students dropping sharply in recent years. While the school has a history of strong 5th-grade science scores, that strength has faded, and only 5th-grade reading (63.79%) currently outperforms the state average (58.47%).

Interestingly, Tom Bean’s per-pupil spending is higher than that of higher-performing neighbors like Bells Elementary and Trenton Elementary, indicating the recent decline is not a funding issue but likely one of instructional strategy and resource allocation. The Tom Bean Independent School District (Isd) (ranked 53rd percentile) is also outperformed by neighboring Bells Independent School District (Isd) (87th percentile) and Van Alstyne Independent School District (Isd) (82nd percentile), giving families clear, higher-performing alternatives nearby. The school has the resources and a recent example of high performance to guide its recovery, but it requires decisive and focused intervention to reverse its trajectory.

Open Quote I had my son in private school because I thought that was the best place for him. After four years, and not learning to read, I pulled him out to go to Tom Bean Elementary. This school changed his life. He had perfect attendance and was on the honor roll. The teachers were supportive and helpful and never once told me there was nothing they could do for him. I will never take my son out of Tom Bean Elementary to go to private school again. This is a great school with a great staff. From the Principal to the custodial staff to the lunch room staff to the librarian, they are all great! Close Quote
