Summary

James P Butler Elementary is a mid-to-large sized school in El Paso, TX, serving 884 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade in the Socorro Independent School District (Isd), located in a suburban area where about 61% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. This school stands out for its impressive ability to help students from low socio-economic backgrounds succeed, ranking in the 79th percentile for that group—higher than its overall 72nd percentile ranking—which shows it is especially effective at closing achievement gaps compared to many nearby schools.

After a dip in performance a few years ago, James P Butler is on a strong upward trend, improving its state ranking for three consecutive years to earn a 4-star rating. This positive momentum sets it apart from schools like Jane A Hambric School, which has been declining, and Paso Del Norte Fine Arts Academy, which has stagnated. The school also operates efficiently, spending less per student ($8,521) than most nearby peers, yet achieving better overall results than higher-spending schools like Sgt Roberto Ituarte ($10,186). A notable strength is 3rd-grade math, where 57% of students are proficient—12 points above the district average—though 4th-grade math lags behind, suggesting a potential transition issue in the curriculum.

While James P Butler excels in many areas, 5th-grade science scores are a common weakness shared with nearly every nearby school, with only Cactus Trails (just 0.92 miles away) performing significantly better in that subject. The school’s special education program has made a dramatic recovery, jumping from the 38th to the 72nd percentile recently, indicating recent interventions are working. For families considering this school, it offers a strong, resource-efficient option that particularly supports students from diverse backgrounds, though you may want to explore how the school addresses the 4th-grade math dip and the science slump if those subjects are a priority.

Open Quote Based on my experience, JPB deserves ten gold stars. From the teachers , staff and administration I always felt apart of my child's education and at home in the school. I really cannot say enough about how kind and easy to work with the front office staff is consistently. My family experienced love and concern for my child’s education from Mrs. Chavez, the principal, down to each teacher he was assigned. The campus is always kept beautiful and up to date. This is clearly demonstrated with the great new “JPB” metal art deco in front of the school. James P. Butler our hats off to each staff member for your love and dedication in primary education . You all are where it all begins! Close Quote
