Central Elementary

Central Elementary is a PK-4 public school in Plainview Independent School District (Isd), serving 505 students in a community where about 81-85% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite these economic challenges, the school has shown remarkable improvement, jumping from the 24th percentile statewide in 2023-2024 to the 45th percentile in 2025-2026—a 21-point gain that makes it the highest-ranked elementary school in its immediate area.

Central Elementary stands out dramatically from its peers. While North Elementary ranks in the 8th percentile and South Elementary in the 17th percentile, Central is the only school in the district showing consistent multi-year growth. Most impressively, 57% of Central's 4th graders were proficient in math in 2025-2026—well above the state average of 49.3% and far ahead of North Elementary (32.4%) and Akin Elementary (35.9%). Even more telling, Central now outperforms Kress Elementary (36th percentile), a school with a much lower poverty rate (52% free/reduced lunch), suggesting Central's recent improvements are driven by effective school-level practices that overcome economic disadvantages.

However, the school has areas needing attention. While male students have surged from the 22nd to the 47th percentile, female students have remained stagnant around the 35th-39th percentile. Gifted and Talented students rank in the bottom 21st percentile, indicating the school may not be adequately challenging its highest achievers. Special Education performance is also volatile, dropping from the 68th percentile to the 32nd percentile in two years. Despite these challenges, Central Elementary is clearly a bright spot in a district ranked in the bottom 14% of Texas, proving that focused effort can yield significant results even in difficult circumstances.
