Summary

Dobie High School in Houston, TX, is a large, comprehensive high school serving over 3,600 students in grades 9-12 within the Pasadena Independent School District (Isd), and it stands out as a stable, mid-tier institution in a diverse educational landscape.

Dobie’s greatest strength is its exceptional support for English Language Learners (ELL), ranking in the 82nd percentile statewide in 2025-2026—a dramatic improvement that far surpasses nearby schools like Pearland High School, which doesn’t even have a subgroup rank for this demographic. The school also excels in English Language Arts, with proficiency rates exceeding both district and state averages, outperforming its district peer South Houston High School by 20-21 percentage points. However, a persistent weakness is Algebra I, where proficiency has consistently lagged behind state and district averages—a clear area for improvement. Despite this, Dobie effectively serves its core student body, with Hispanic and low socio-economic status students ranking in the 69th and 65th percentiles statewide, respectively, showing the school is closing opportunity gaps.

In a neighborhood with extreme contrasts—from high-performing charters like Beta Academy (94th percentile) to struggling schools like Texans Can Academy - Houston Hobby (5th percentile) with dropout rates near 30%—Dobie is a beacon of stability. Its graduation rate has consistently hovered around 90-92% for the past five years, a critical achievement for a school where roughly two-thirds of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While it may not match the top-tier performance of nearby Pearland High School in every subject, Dobie provides a reliable, middle-of-the-road education that successfully graduates the vast majority of its students year after year.

Open Quote This is a HORRIBLE school. The teachers and administrators, especially the principals, have such disrespectful attitudes toward students and parents. They behave as though they go to work just because they need to collect a paycheck. Some teachers actually verbalize that they hate kids and hate teaching. Several teachers, and even the principals are bullies. They don't enforce a dress code yet send a student to weekend detention for wearing a t-shirt. The teachers don't provide grades to the students or the parents as they are required to do and the administrators don't force them to either. It's as though they just don't care at all. If I could take my child out of this school and this system, I would! Close Quote
