Summary

Decker Elementary is a small PK-5 campus in the Manor Independent School District (Isd) in Austin, TX, serving 366 students with a very favorable student-to-teacher ratio of 11.3:1. However, the school is currently facing significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 5% of all Texas elementary schools for the last five years. This represents a steep decline from the 2017-2018 school year when it ranked in the 51st percentile. While nearby schools like Bluebonnet Trail Elementary and Oak Meadows Elementary also struggle, Decker's performance is notably worse, and its decline has been much more dramatic.

One of the most interesting findings is that Decker's low student-teacher ratio is the best among all nearby schools, including high-performing ones like Winn Montessori and Magnolia Montessori For All. This suggests that the school's struggles are not due to large class sizes, but rather point to deeper instructional or systemic challenges. Additionally, per-student spending at Decker ($11,195) is in the middle of the pack compared to nearby schools, indicating that funding is not the primary issue. For example, Overton Elementary spends more per student ($13,757) but also struggles academically.

Despite the overall low performance, there is a unique bright spot in Decker's Spanish-language program. In the 2025-2026 school year, 56.52% of 4th graders taking the Spanish Reading STAAR were proficient, significantly outperforming the district and state averages. This contrasts sharply with the English-language program, where 4th-grade Math proficiency was just 16.67% and 5th-grade Math was only 6.25%. This disparity suggests that the bilingual program may be a relative area of effectiveness that could be scaled to improve outcomes across the school. The school's future success likely hinges on identifying and expanding these effective practices while fundamentally re-evaluating its approach to instruction in English-language classrooms.
