Summary

The East Austin College Prep At Southwest Key is a small public charter elementary school in Austin, TX, serving 159 students in grades PK-6 as part of the Valere Public Schools district, and it serves a community with very high economic need, with 95.6% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, this school has consistently struggled, ranking in the bottom 6% of Texas elementary schools, which is a significant decline from its peak in the 48th percentile in 2016-2017. Math is a critical weakness, with 6th graders scoring 0% proficient in 2024-2025 and only 7.69% in 2025-2026. However, there is a notable bright spot: the school's English Language Learner (ELL) students rank in the 39th percentile statewide, earning a 2-star rating, suggesting effective support for this group. In contrast, Special Education students rank in the 0th percentile, indicating a severe area of concern. Nearby schools like Blanton Elementary (81st percentile) and Ortega Elementary (56th percentile) perform significantly higher, despite being within two miles, and they are traditional public schools in the Austin Independent School District (Isd).

The school's per-student spending ($8,335) is lower than all nearby peers, which range from $10,142 at Blanton to $15,846 at Winn Montessori, suggesting it may be under-resourced. The contrast with Blanton Elementary, which serves a less economically disadvantaged population (46.39% free/reduced lunch), highlights the powerful correlation between socioeconomic status and academic outcomes. Additionally, the charter model here is not outperforming traditional public schools in the area, as the highest-performing nearby schools are all Austin ISD schools. This information can help parents weigh school choice options in this part of Austin.

Open Quote Revolving door of principals and staff, this year the principal quit a month before the staar test. Students are rowdy, disrespectful, and hopeless. The front office staff is rude. They break SPED/504 laws all the time, and they are so disorganized with everything. TEA should shut it down. Close Quote
