Summary

Saegert Elementary is a large PK-5 school in Killeen, TX, serving 940 students in a mid-density suburban area within the Killeen Independent School District (Isd).

Saegert Elementary has experienced a notable decline in recent years, dropping from a consistent 3-star rating to a 2-star rating, with its state ranking falling from the 57th to the 37th percentile. This downward trend is a key concern, especially when compared to nearby schools like Maude Moore Wood Elementary and Mountain View Elementary, which have maintained or improved their performance. The school's math scores are a significant weakness, with only 26% of 3rd graders proficient, well below state and district averages. However, there are bright spots: 5th-grade reading scores are a consistent strength, outperforming both the district and state, and the school serves its Hispanic and English Language Learner students exceptionally well compared to other schools statewide.

Despite its challenges, Saegert still outperforms its closest neighbor, Trimmier Elementary, which has a similar demographic profile but ranks much lower. The school's per-student spending is higher than several peers, suggesting the decline is not simply a resource issue but may point to instructional or curriculum challenges. The "5th Grade Effect" is a notable pattern, with 5th graders consistently outperforming younger students, indicating a potential strength to replicate in lower grades. Science scores have also dropped dramatically, warranting investigation. Overall, Saegert offers strong reading instruction for older students and effective support for specific student groups, but families should be aware of the recent decline and significant math challenges.

Open Quote The school treats the parents like criminals and feels like a prison. It is near impossible to get on to campus to have access to your own children, for reasons such as, a dentist appointment. However, even when you are buzzed in to come in through the front door, you have to show government issued ID and sign in - like a prison. Furthermore, after 3:00, they keep your children without you having access to them, for over an hour, unless you have committed your child to be picked up 24 hours in advance - this is not district policy and is illegal according to state law, which says the school cannot deny you access to your children except but 15 minutes prior to dismissal (which is at 4:00).
My children are all GT - a protected class in Texas, and yet are constantly ignored by their teachers. I have to buy curriculum and teach them at home, after school, to keep them engaged in learning, because their school curriculum consists of crafts and busy work.
Hopefully the principal sees this and corrects course. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has provided poor customer service and have not offered my children a safe place to attend. They have a poor anti-bully program and their concern for children is minimal. They have vague policies that are difficult to understand the unwritten portion of the policies that they have also created. The parents are then blamed for not following policy. Parents are not included in the decision making process in regards to their own children. Everything is ultimately up to the principal. I do not find out pertinant information about my children until it is too late. Their is a breakdown in their overall system. They are rude and do not understand proper customer service. The teachers yell at the children because they are unsure of how to handle the children. The administration tolerates this as a whole. The admin assistants are unprofessional and enjoy talking about parents in front of other parents. All these people need training. Close Quote
