Summary

Mountain View Elementary in Harker Heights, TX, is a public school serving 765 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Killeen Independent School District (Isd), and it has achieved a remarkable turnaround to become one of the top-performing schools in the area.

Over the past five years, Mountain View has climbed from the 37th percentile statewide to the 73rd percentile, earning a 4-star rating. This upward trend sets it apart from nearby schools like Trimmier Elementary (17th percentile), Hay Branch Elementary (16th percentile), and Timber Ridge Elementary (27th percentile), which often struggle to meet state averages. Mountain View consistently outperforms both its district and the state in Reading and Math across all tested grades. For example, in 4th Grade Reading, 62.31% of students are proficient compared to the district average of 46.07%. The school also excels with specific student groups, ranking in the 94th percentile for Gifted and Talented students and in the 77th to 82nd percentile for Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low-socioeconomic status students—a sign of effective and equitable teaching. While 5th Grade Science scores remain a relative weakness, they still surpass district and state averages.

Mountain View achieves these results with a lower per-student spending of $9,081 compared to many lower-performing peers, such as Nolanville Elementary ($11,315). Its closest rival, Skipcha Elementary (70th percentile), has seen Mountain View nearly close the performance gap in recent years, creating a healthy competitive dynamic. With a lower free/reduced lunch rate (56.99%) than many neighbors, the school offers a diverse socioeconomic mix that supports a stable learning environment. Overall, Mountain View Elementary is a standout school that has proven its ability to drive strong academic growth for all students.

Open Quote If you have a child that needs an IEP, don't go here. Just moved here from Germany where my daughter went to a DoD School. She was given an IEP in April. School ended in June. School stated in August at Mountain View. It is now NOV and the school is trying to take my daughters IEP. My's daughter's counselor told us that we are not the only family going through this. SHe said she has at least 8 other kids losing their IEPs. Granted it is throughout the KISD district but that is telling you something if one counselor has that many kids loosing IEPs. Multiply that 8 by the number of children's counselors at Darnell Hospital and that makes a large number of kids loosing their IEPs. Close Quote
