Summary

Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary in Katy, TX, is a high-performing school within the Katy Independent School District (Isd), serving 1,034 students from Pre-K through 5th grade with a consistent record of academic excellence. What truly sets Rylander apart is its ability to achieve top-tier results while serving a student body where 43.8% qualify for free or reduced lunch—a much higher proportion than nearby high-achieving peers like Griffin Elementary (17.1%) or Odessa Kilpatrick Elementary (18.1%). This demonstrates that the school’s success is not just about demographics but about effective, school-level practices that drive strong outcomes for all students.

Rylander excels in supporting English Language Learners (ELL), ranking in the 91st percentile statewide for this group—a standout metric that shows the school is closing achievement gaps effectively. However, a closer look reveals a fascinating contrast: while students perform exceptionally well on English STAAR tests (often 15-25 points above state averages), performance on Spanish STAAR exams is significantly lower, with 5th-grade reading proficiency at 0% compared to the district’s 45.7%. This suggests a specific challenge in the Spanish-language program that may need attention. Additionally, the 2025-2026 school year saw a slight dip in some subgroup rankings, such as Female Students dropping from the 91st to 88th percentile, though overall performance remains strong.

Compared to nearby schools, Rylander offers a balanced and efficient education. For instance, its 3rd-grade math score (76.2%) actually exceeded Odessa Kilpatrick’s (70.7%), and its per-student spending of $9,889 is lower than Griffin Elementary’s $11,039, making it a high-value investment. The contrast with Cimarron Elementary, a nearby 1-star school with 60% free/reduced lunch and dramatically lower test scores, highlights that Rylander’s success is a result of specific, effective practices rather than just district resources. For parents, Rylander represents a school that consistently delivers strong academics while serving a diverse community, though the Spanish STAAR results are worth investigating further.

Open Quote I am very pleased with their communication throughout the school. From the principal, admin staff, and teachers. They do many different activities and I love that students bring their work home after it’s been graded. Sadly, a lot of schools/teachers do not do this small thing to let the parents know not only what their child is doing but how. Because of Covid, we are not really able to go up to the school, but the over communication really makes up for it. Close Quote

Open Quote Very disappointed in the counselors and principles within this school. They do not handle problems appropriately at the parent or child level. When a child is sent to the office, they do not ask the children questions in a manor that will not guide the guide the child's response. They also do not seem to understand that the children are scared and intimidated by this level of school staff. Bear Creek Elementary handled issues far better than this school!! But in the long run, wish we were back at Williams Elementary. Close Quote
