Summary

Hughes Springs Elementary in Hughes Springs, TX, serves 531 students in grades PK-5 within the Hughes Springs Independent School District (Isd), a district ranked in the 62nd percentile statewide. The school has a clear standout strength in 5th grade science, where it consistently outperforms the state average by a wide margin—scoring 55.56% proficient in 2024-2025 compared to the state's 29.57%—and far exceeds nearby schools like South Elementary (4.23%) and Chapel Hill Elementary (15.19%). However, this science success is an oasis in a desert of declining performance, as the school has dropped from the 71st percentile in 2021-2022 to the 31st percentile for 2025-2026, while nearby schools like Pewitt Elementary have shown more stability.

Beyond science, Hughes Springs struggles in reading and math, consistently falling 4-12 percentage points below the state average across all grades. The school's overall decline is broad-based, with most student subgroups—including those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, who dropped from the 75th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 23rd percentile in 2025-2026—performing in the bottom 20% of the state. Notably, male students are the only subgroup performing at an average level (52nd percentile), while female students rank in the 15th percentile. This suggests a school-wide issue that has intensified recently, despite a decreasing percentage of students receiving free/reduced lunch (from 66.73% to 51.79%).

Compared to its closest neighbor, South Elementary in the lower-ranked Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District (Isd), Hughes Springs serves a less economically disadvantaged population but still struggles in math, while South Elementary has comparable reading scores in some years. The school's trajectory is moving in the wrong direction, making its science excellence a key differentiator but also highlighting the need for targeted interventions in other subjects and for specific student groups to reverse the downward trend.

Open Quote As a faculty member, I felt well supported and cared for by the principal and assistant principal. They worked hard to have a schedule that met the needs of our students as well as reasonable class sizes (20 or less) for the benefit of the student and teacher. It's a very proud school that puts money behind academics and things that matter. Very lucky to have been a part of their staff. Close Quote
