Summary

Houston Academy For International Studies (HAIS) is a small, high-performing magnet high school in central Houston serving 473 students as part of the Houston Independent School District (Isd).

HAIS stands out as an equity champion, achieving top-tier academic results while serving a student body where nearly 60% qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school boasts a remarkable 100% graduation rate for four of the last five years and a 0.0% dropout rate, far exceeding the district average. It consistently ranks in the 94th percentile statewide, placing it among the top 6% of Texas high schools. This is particularly impressive when compared to nearby elite magnets like Carnegie Vanguard High School and Kinder H S For Performing And Visual Arts, which serve far fewer economically disadvantaged students. HAIS also delivers this excellence cost-effectively, with per-student spending lower than the district average and significantly less than schools like Yates High School.

While HAIS excels in subjects like U.S. History (91.9% proficient) and Biology (90.1%), its Algebra I performance (73.4% proficient) is a relative weak point compared to its own high standards. Its closest peer, Young Women's College Prep Academy (just 0.49 miles away), has a slight academic edge in core high school subjects like English II and U.S. History, making the competition between these two excellent schools very tight. Overall, HAIS is a standout choice for families seeking a world-class education in a diverse, supportive environment.

Open Quote A small school with small classes. Great teachers, They keep the parents well inform. I like that they treat there students like young adults. One of the few schools that I know of, Probably the only one that a student can graduate with an Associate Degree. We need more schools like Houston Academy for International Studies. HISD can not afford any more cut backs. If we want our children to succeed in our country. We need to put our tax dollars into our schools. Close Quote
