Summary

China Elementary in China, TX, serves 600 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the Hardin-Jefferson Independent School District (Isd), a district ranked in the top 22% of Texas. While the school has historically been a solid performer, its state ranking has declined to the 46th percentile (2 stars) in the most recent data, marking its lowest point in a decade. This downward trend is a key concern, especially when compared to its district peer, Sour Lake Elementary, located just 7 miles away, which achieved an 80th percentile ranking (4 stars) in the same year. For example, in 5th-grade Reading, Sour Lake scored 69.72% proficient compared to China Elementary's 47.75%, and in 3rd-grade Math, the gap was even wider: 69.52% vs. 38.14%.

Despite these challenges, China Elementary performs significantly better than most schools in the nearby Beaumont Independent School District (Isd). For instance, its 3rd-grade reading proficiency (42%) is nearly double that of Dishman Elementary (22.86%) and Amelia Elementary (25.71%). The school also excels with its Gifted and Talented students, who ranked in the 85th percentile statewide (4 stars), and Hispanic students, who ranked in the 70th percentile (4 stars). However, the school struggles with White students (23rd percentile) and Special Education students (19th percentile), both earning 1 star. A bright spot is 4th-grade Math, where students scored 58.43% proficient, above the state average of 49.28% and the district average of 55.98%.

Science remains a persistent weakness, with 5th-grade scores consistently below the state average over the last four years. Interestingly, China Elementary spends about $8,861 per student, less than many struggling Beaumont ISD schools like Amelia Elementary ($10,756) but more than its higher-performing peer Sour Lake Elementary ($8,115). This suggests that the effectiveness of spending, not just the amount, is critical. For parents, China Elementary offers a relatively higher-performing option in a region with many low-performing schools, but the recent decline and gaps compared to Sour Lake Elementary warrant careful consideration.
