Summary

Juan N Seguin Elementary is a PK-5 school in the Grand Prairie Independent School District (Isd), serving 452 students in a high-poverty area where over 84% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school is in the midst of a remarkable turnaround. After ranking in the bottom 20% statewide for most of the past decade, it jumped from the 11th percentile to the 50th percentile in just two years—its highest ranking ever. This is especially impressive given that nearby schools like Hobbs Williams Elementary (17th percentile) and Global Leadership Academy At Barbara Bush Elementary (10th percentile) remain in the bottom quartile. The school is particularly effective with its economically disadvantaged students, who ranked in the 69th percentile statewide—even higher than the school's overall rank. In 4th grade math, students achieved a 58% proficiency rate, the highest among nearby district elementary schools and well above both the district and state averages.

However, there are areas needing attention. While English reading scores are near district averages, Spanish reading scores lag significantly—only 8% of 3rd graders were proficient compared to 25% district-wide. Science remains a weakness, with just 16% of 5th graders proficient. The school spends more per student ($11,641) than most nearby peers and has a lower student-teacher ratio (13.2), which likely supports its progress. Notably, while most student groups are improving, special education performance dropped dramatically from the 70th to the 6th percentile, a red flag that needs investigation. The school's success is particularly striking when compared to the nearby School For The Highly Gifted, which serves a very different population and achieves near-perfect scores—highlighting how challenging and impressive Juan N Seguin's turnaround truly is.

Open Quote As a parent of a former seguin 2nd grader i honestly believe the teachers are doing the best they can with what they got. The new principal is not having a positive effect on the school and you can tell because so many teachers left after last year and the teachers that are still there dont look that happy Close Quote
