Summary

Colin Powell Elementary is a PK-5 public school in the Grand Prairie Independent School District (Isd) serving 628 students, and it stands out as a high-performing school in an area where most nearby schools rank in the bottom half of the state. This school has consistently ranked among the top 10-15% of Texas elementary schools over the past decade, earning 4 or 5 stars from SchoolDigger for nine straight years. While its most recent ranking (88th percentile) is slightly below its peak, it remains a top-tier choice for families, with academic proficiency rates that are often double or triple those of neighboring schools.

When compared to nearby schools, Colin Powell's performance is remarkable. For example, in 5th grade math, 69.6% of Colin Powell students were proficient, compared to just 32.4% at West Elementary and 41.4% at Garner Fine Arts Academy, the closest competitor located just half a mile away. The school also excels in 5th grade reading (78.3% proficient) and 4th grade math (66.2% proficient), far exceeding district and state averages. Notably, Colin Powell shows strong effectiveness across all student groups, with particularly outstanding results for African American students, who rank in the 94th percentile statewide. The school serves a diverse population, with 43% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch—a lower rate than most nearby schools, which range from 67% to 81%.

While Colin Powell is a clear standout, there are areas for growth. Science scores, though nearly double the district average, are the school's lowest subject and represent an opportunity for improvement. Additionally, the school's performance for special education students (70th percentile) and White students (71st percentile) has declined in recent years, suggesting a need for targeted support. Overall, Colin Powell Elementary is a "diamond in the rough"—a high-performing school in a cluster of lower-performing schools—and a strong choice for families seeking academic excellence in the Grand Prairie area.

Open Quote My daughters love Powell, teachers and their classmates. The teachers are firm and expect more than the average from their students but they also always have fun. Mrs. Ayers the principal is firm but very kind and always has a beautiful smile. The school all together is very well structured and I always feel my daughters are safe at school. We love Powell!
