Summary

Ervin C Whitt Elementary is a PK-5 school in the Grand Prairie Independent School District (Isd) serving 523 students in a community where over 75% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. After years of solid performance ranking in the 50th-60th percentile statewide, the school has experienced a dramatic 32-point drop to the 28th percentile in the most recent data, marking its lowest ranking in a decade and signaling a period of rapid transition.

The most concerning trend is the collapse in support for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, which fell from the 70th percentile to the 24th percentile in just two years—a reversal not seen at nearby schools like Lorenzo De Zavala Environmental Science Academy (61st to 51st) or Ellen Ochoa Stem Academy At Ben Miliam Elementary (34th to 52nd, which improved). Additionally, a significant gender gap has emerged, with male students now ranking at the 23rd percentile compared to female students at the 38th percentile. The school also struggles with its most vulnerable and advanced learners, as the Special Education program ranks in the bottom 20% and the Gifted & Talented program ranks in the bottom 7% statewide.

Despite these challenges, there is a bright spot: 5th-grade reading scores are a consistent strength, with 59.42% of students proficient—outperforming both the district (51.37%) and the state (58.47%). However, mathematics is a systemic weakness across all grades, with 5th-grade math proficiency at just 22.22%, less than half the state average and the worst in its cluster of neighborhood schools. While the nearby School For The Highly Gifted ranks 6th in the state, it serves a very different student population and is not a fair comparison. The school's future success will depend on stabilizing math instruction, rebuilding support for economically disadvantaged students, and addressing the specific needs of its male student population.
