Summary

Vernon Schrade Middle in Rowlett, TX, serves 697 students in grades 6-8 within the Garland Independent School District (Isd), where about 66% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, indicating a community with significant economic disadvantage.

This school faces serious academic challenges, with state rankings dropping from the 55th percentile to the 13th percentile over the past decade. It is the lowest-performing middle school in its immediate area, especially when compared to nearby high-achieving schools like Grady Burnett J H and J W Williams Middle in Wylie Independent School District (Isd), or B G Hudson Middle within its own district. For example, in 8th-grade reading, only 42% of Vernon Schrade students were proficient, compared to over 74% at B.G. Hudson. The most alarming issue is in mathematics: in 7th-grade math, less than 1% of students were proficient, a catastrophic figure compared to the district average of 25% and state average of 31%. This "7th-grade math cliff" demands urgent investigation.

Despite these struggles, there are two bright spots. The school excels in Algebra I acceleration, with nearly 78% of test-takers proficient—far exceeding the district and state averages. Additionally, English Language Learner students rank in the 62nd percentile, a significant improvement. However, these successes haven't been replicated for the broader student body. The school's closest neighbor, Coyle Middle Technology Center For Math & Science, has a similar economic profile but performs slightly better, suggesting school-specific factors are at play. For parents, this means Vernon Schrade offers strong advanced math and ELL programs, but the core academic experience, particularly in standard math classes, needs substantial improvement.

Open Quote This school is absolutely horrific. Worst middle school i've ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

Among MANY other things, they wouldn't allow my son to drop a Spanish course, which he was struggling with. That F has now followed him into Sachse high school where he has started out his high school year with an F gpa. I'm VERY upset and angry about this!

And, the allowed a girl student to drop the course, but not him. Thanks alot!

The principle in particular was terrible as well. He was out of school for a month and I emailed her frequently, asking for assignments he was missing, she repeatedly said she would get them, but never did.

Avoid this school at all costs. Close Quote

Open Quote My son attended Schrade and it was the very best public school I have ever chosen. The teachers are caring and has a concern for all of the children. They are informative, constructive and they treat your children the way teachers are suppose to treat them, like a student. No one crossed the boundaries and I have a great respect for them. I appreciate Schrade's Faculty and thank you for help shaping son's life.
