While Nelson Elementary performs well overall, it faces some challenges in serving specific student subgroups. The school ranks in the top 20% of Texas elementary schools for African American students but struggles with Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) student performance, ranking in the bottom 50% of Texas schools for these subgroups. The school also has a lower ranking for students with special needs, ranking in the bottom 30% of Texas elementary schools. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, around 42% in recent years, indicating a significant population of economically disadvantaged students.

Comparing Nelson Elementary to nearby schools, Blanton Elementary consistently outperforms it across all academic measures, ranking in the top 10% of Texas elementary schools. Open Quote Since my children were transferred to LA Nelson, their test scores have gone down and they do not demonstrate a great grasp of the materials. I am doubtful they will be ready when they are advanced to Middle School. My son went from passing his TAKS tests to failing them. A huge drop in test scores from third grade to fourth. My daughter is now lagging on her reading scores and math scores.

Denton ISD has a poor record and seems to be maintaining that standard with LA Nelson. Close Quote
