Summary

Terrell Elementary in Denison, TX, is a PK-4 school serving 432 students within the Denison Independent School District (Isd), and it is currently facing significant academic challenges after a dramatic decline from being a high-performing school just a few years ago.

Terrell Elementary has experienced a severe and accelerating drop in state rankings, falling from the 71st percentile (4-star rating) in 2020-2021 to the 8th percentile (0-star) in 2025-2026. This decline is unmatched by any nearby school. For example, while other Denison ISD schools like Hyde Park Elementary (61st percentile) and Mayes Elementary (59th percentile) have shown stability or improvement, Terrell has lost 63 percentile points in five years. Test scores are consistently low across all subjects and grades, with 4th-grade math proficiency at just 19.75%—less than half the district average. The school's struggles affect every student subgroup, with all groups ranking in the bottom 13th percentile or lower, indicating a systemic issue rather than one tied to a specific demographic.

Interestingly, Terrell's challenges are not due to a lack of resources. Its per-student spending ($12,001) is higher than several higher-performing peers, including Pottsboro Elementary ($9,536), which ranks in the 89th percentile just 7 miles away. The school also has a high poverty rate (70.83% free/reduced lunch), but this alone does not explain its decline—Houston Elementary has an even higher poverty rate (78.43%) and has not experienced such a catastrophic drop. Terrell's past success with "At Risk" students (ranking in the 82nd percentile in 2021-2022) proves improvement is possible, but urgent intervention is needed to reverse the current trajectory.

Open Quote My children attend Terrell Elementary and I am also a substitute teacher for the district. Of all the schools in Denison, it is the most organized, welcoming, and encouraging campus. The teachers are top-notch and truly care about their students. The Principal and office staff are wonderful and are always there to help. I highly recommend this school! Close Quote
