Summary

Mockingbird Elementary in Coppell, TX, is a high-performing school serving 441 students in grades PK through 5 within the top-ranked Coppell Independent School District (Isd), which is in the top 2% of all Texas districts. The school has a strong track record of excellence, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past decade and ranking in the 91st percentile of all Texas elementary schools. With a favorable student-to-teacher ratio of 12.6:1 and a low percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch (8.62%), Mockingbird provides a solid foundation for learning, though it is not the top performer in its immediate area.

Within the Coppell ISD, Mockingbird is a solid, above-average school but is outperformed by several neighbors, such as Canyon Ranch Elementary (98th percentile), Valley Ranch Elementary (97th percentile), and Lakeside Elementary (97th percentile). A key concern is a significant decline in 5th-grade math proficiency, which dropped to 59.38% in the 2025-2026 school year, well below the district average of 72.84% and a stark contrast to its own recent history. This single metric is the primary driver of the school's recent dip in overall state ranking, suggesting a specific, solvable issue rather than a systemic decline. In contrast, just 0.66 miles away, Riverchase Ele in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District (Isd) has a 53.83% free/reduced lunch rate and a 46th percentile state ranking, highlighting how district boundaries can create dramatically different educational opportunities.

Despite the math dip, Mockingbird's reading scores are strong across all grades, and its math scores in 3rd and 4th grade remain competitive with the district. The school excels in serving specific student groups, including Special Education students (95th percentile in 2023-2024) and Gifted and Talented students (91st percentile in 2025-2026). Interestingly, Mockingbird's per-student spending ($9,472) is higher than that of top-performing Canyon Ranch Elementary ($7,568), suggesting that higher-ranked schools may achieve results through greater operational efficiency or other factors. Overall, Mockingbird offers a consistent, high-quality education with a proven track record, and the current data points to a specific challenge in 5th-grade math that the school is well-positioned to address.

Open Quote Excellent school, the teacher's have a heart to serve, and they truly make learning fun. The teacher's teach outside the box and promote forward/concept thinking. The teacher's reach out to us parents and give us progress on our kids throughout the year, not just during report card time. The kids are assigned Ipads in kindergarten through 5th grade, but also are encouraged to check out books at the library and read them. The hallways are filled with encouraging words and sayings for all to read, both by the students and by the teachers. Parents are encouraged to get involved and stay plugged in, from volunteering to coming to lunch. This school is also very physically active, by the time my kids finished 5th grade they were in excellent physical shape. They have a running club, that parents are encouraged to get involved in as well. They strive for excellence and it shows! Close Quote
