Summary

Charter Oak Elementary in Temple, TX, is a mid-sized school serving 602 students in grades K-5 within the Belton Independent School District (Isd), and it stands out as a solid, above-average performer with a strong focus on reading and science. One of its most impressive achievements is in 5th-grade science, where nearly half of students are proficient—a rate that is almost double the district average and 70% higher than the state average. This makes Charter Oak a clear academic anchor in the area, especially when compared to nearby schools like Joe M Pirtle Elementary, which has similar enrollment and poverty levels but consistently trails Charter Oak in nearly every subject and grade level.

While the school excels in reading and science, mathematics is a persistent weakness. For example, 4th-grade math proficiency has been significantly below the state average, suggesting a need for targeted improvement in math instruction or curriculum. Additionally, the school faces challenges in supporting its most vulnerable students, including English Language Learners and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. Performance for these groups has been volatile, with some subgroups experiencing dramatic swings in rankings from year to year. This indicates that while the school serves its general population well, there is room for more consistent support for all students.

Charter Oak’s success is particularly notable given its moderate level of economic disadvantage, with about 40% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. This positions the school as a "middle-class success story," outperforming peers like High Point Elementary and Joe M Pirtle Elementary, which have similar poverty rates but lower academic results. With a low student-teacher ratio of 12.7:1, Charter Oak provides a favorable environment for individualized instruction, making it a strong choice for families seeking a well-rounded elementary education in the southwestern part of the district.

Open Quote My child is attending for the second year in a row and my husband and I cannot be more satisfied with this school. We were exceptionally blessed to have the best teachers for both school years and do not have one thing to complain about. If there are any issues, Leslie who works in the office could not be any sweeter or more attentive to anyone’s concerns. Hands down the best school in the Temple or Belton area! Close Quote
