Summary

Homer Dr Elementary in Beaumont, TX, is a PK-5 school serving 495 students within the Beaumont Independent School District (Isd), a district that ranks in the bottom 6% of all Texas school districts. The school faces significant socioeconomic challenges, with over 95% of its students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and has a long history of very low academic performance, consistently ranking in the bottom 1-6% of Texas elementary schools over the past decade.

The school's most critical weakness is in mathematics, where only 7.25% of 3rd graders and 11.11% of 4th graders were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year—roughly half the already-low district average and a fraction of the state average. This is significantly worse than nearby schools like Curtis Elementary (21st percentile) and Regina Howell Elementary (41st percentile), and even worse than its closest neighbor, Guess Elementary (3rd percentile). Science scores are also abysmally low, with only 4.94% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025, the lowest among its immediate peers. However, the school shows a relative strength in serving its Hispanic student population, who ranked in the 20th percentile statewide in 2023-2024, the highest-performing subgroup at the school.

Interestingly, the school's performance has not always been this low. In the 2016-2017 school year, it ranked in the 24th percentile, but has since experienced a dramatic and sustained decline. This is not solely explained by poverty, as nearby Martin Elementary has a similar poverty rate (97.29%) but performs significantly better. Additionally, Bob Hope School Beaumont, a charter school just 0.76 miles away with a high poverty rate (86.57%), outperforms Homer Dr in nearly every subject and grade level, suggesting that different instructional models or school cultures can yield better results even with a high-needs population.

Open Quote I have volunteered at this school, and although what I saw was just a small portion of it, in talking with a few of the teachers I learned that some kids just have crappy parents who don't put any time or effort into them. If they are not getting good basics at home, they are probably not going to thrive at school, or in the real world. The librarians, office staff, other teachers I saw in the hall seemed very caring and the children seemed well behaved. Close Quote
