Summary

Dresden Elementary School is a PK–4 elementary school in Dresden, Tennessee, serving 440 students as part of the Weakley County School District — a district ranked in the top 20 percent of Tennessee. The school has a solid record of above-average performance, though its most recent statewide ranking slipped to the 69th percentile (3 stars), a dip from its usual 80th-percentile standing over the past decade.

For parents, one of the most reassuring facts about Dresden is its exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 7.3% — roughly half the district rate and far below the state rate of 18.3%. Nearby Sharon School, just 7 miles away, reports a 27.0% rate, while Rutherford Elementary (6.9%) and Kenton Elementary (7.4%) are the only nearby schools with comparable attendance. Dresden's students also post solid academic numbers: 54.6% proficiency in math and 57.5% in ELA, both well above state averages. The school is especially effective with historically underserved students — its special education students rank in the 87th percentile statewide, and low-income students rank in the 77th. All of this is accomplished while spending a moderate $12,613 per student, far less than Sharon ($22,342) or Kenton ($18,948), with a favorable 13.6 student-teacher ratio.

The main concern for families to watch is science. Dresden's science proficiency fell from 55.0% to 44.8% in a single year — now below the state average — and 3rd-grade science is particularly weak at 38.8%, compared with 49.6% at Martin Elementary. There are also emerging achievement gaps: male students and White students have seen their percentile rankings drop significantly over the past two years, even as other subgroups improve. That said, Dresden's 4th-grade scores are strong across all subjects, and its year-to-year stability compared with Sharon's dramatic swings suggests the foundation — low absenteeism, strong special education results, and a top-ranked district — remains solid for a return to its former heights.

Open Quote as a parent of a special needs child, it is sad that we have medical documentation of my son's HFA and yet have been denied for an IEP. he has a 504 plan, but we are still struggling due to the school and school board not wanting to helping, lied about his grades to not help him, didn't help when he was reading in the 4 just said they would watch him until after i filed for an IEP, then an IEE and was denied again. the school is not what it seems, the outside looks good, but i see now why the number of mixed race kids is so low.
