Summary

Rickman Elementary School is a PK–8 school in Rickman, Tennessee, serving 707 students within Overton County Schools—the largest of the nearby comparison schools and the highest-ranked elementary in the district. For 2025–2026, it ranks 390th out of 1,019 Tennessee elementary schools (62nd percentile, 3 stars), placing it well above Hilham Elementary and A H Roberts Elementary, the other Overton County schools in this group.

One of Rickman's biggest strengths is attendance: its chronic absenteeism rate is just 8.7%, less than half the district rate of 17.8% and the state rate of 18.3%. The school also does an outstanding job with economically disadvantaged students—its low-SES subgroup ranks at the 84th percentile statewide, far above the school's overall ranking and improving each year. This is especially notable given Rickman's per-student spending of $10,608, which is lower than every other school in the comparison group, including Hilham ($12,883), A H Roberts ($13,394), and Putnam County Schools like Capshaw Elementary ($13,284) and Algood Elementary ($14,165). Academically, students exceed the district in all four core subjects and outperform the state in science (50.6% proficient) and social studies (54.3%).

However, the school faces real challenges. Its overall state ranking has declined steadily from the 84th percentile in 2020–2021 to the 62nd percentile today. The most concerning areas are 8th grade math, where only 31.2% of students are proficient compared to 42.7% in the district, and special education outcomes, which have dropped from the 67th percentile in 2021–2022 to the 18th percentile in 2025–2026. By contrast, elementary grades remain strong—4th and 5th grade math proficiency rates exceed 51%, and 6th grade ELA and social studies are well above state averages. With excellent attendance and proven success supporting low-income students, Rickman has a solid foundation, but addressing the middle-school math gap and special education decline will be key to reversing its downward trend.
